until next yearI still can’t believe 2014 is coming to a close. Boy, what a crazy whirlwind year it has been! Lots of great stuff has happened this year…from celebrating our first wedding anniversary, to buying our new home and getting started on all of the renovations, it has all flown by so fast. It’s been so much fun sharing every step of the way with you guys and I can’t wait to keep that going in 2015.

So before all of the celebrations begin, I wanted to wish you all Merry Christmas & Happy New Year! I hope your next week if filled with love, happiness, and a whole bunch of shenanigans!

Until next year…

Now that I’m officially in my mid-20’s, I think I’ve gotten to the point where birthdays aren’t as exciting anymore. Now, don’t get me wrong, I still love a good birthday celebration and I’ll use any excuse to throw a fun party for someone else but as far as exciting milestone birthdays of my own go, you can pretty much stick a fork in me. But you know what birthday I am a little bit excited about? Today is the day that The Spiffy Company turns 1!

It’s hard to believe that one year ago today, I put pen to paper my fingertips to the keyboard and started this whole thing, and while I’m tempted to go buy a tiny birthday cake and smash it all over my computer screen (because, that’s a thing right?) my better judgement is sitting on my shoulder telling me that’s a bad idea. As much as I want to dazzle you with my best proud grandma impression and whip out my long scroll of wallet photos to gush about how much my ‘baby’ has grown, I’ll spare you that cheese fest and just go with some simple appreciation.

A huge thanks to everyone who continues to come back here to see what’s going on in my life, even if that might just sometimes be my mom…(Hi mom!) I’m humbled when I see that anyone has taken the time to check out what’s going on over here and can truly say I wouldn’t keep doing it if not for you guys. It’s been so much fun to watch and feel The Spiffy Company growing over the last year and I can’t wait to see what else is in store.

So, in honor of all this humility…

If your friends are anything like mine, they’re stylish, hilarious and, let’s face it, a little bit weird. I love me some weird. If you’re being nice, you might call it “quirky” maybe even “idiosyncratic” if you’re trying to sound fancy, but I embrace my weird and I like my friends to do the same. After all, what are best friends for if not to know to immediately delete all evidence of your long standing (and very weird) group text messages if anything should ever happen to you? We can’t go disgracing the family name…

But anyway, I digress. I love my fabulously, stylish, hilarious, and yes, slightly weird, friends but all of these amazing qualities can make holiday gifting a little difficult. What do you get the girl who has everything? Or, what are you supposed to buy when a scarf or a candle just won’t cut it? I’ve put together a (slightly weird) holiday gift guide to, hopefully, help you in finding the perfect gift for your awesome friends who embrace their weird. a (slightly weird) holiday gift guide

1 | The Queen of weird herself. Amy Poehler’s new book, Yes Please, is everything you would expect from one of the funniest ladies around. I’m about 3/4 of the way finished reading it and have trouble putting it down.

2 | Buy this game for your weird friends and then play it with them while drinking your cocktail of choice. I promise you endless hours of fun if you promise me you won’t play it with you grandma.

3 | Because who doesn’t need a sassy t-shirt? This website has a ton of really great other ones too, like this one and this one to name a couple other favorites.

4 | Baggu bags are pretty awesome. Quality is top notch and the leather is ‘like buttah’ and these little pouches are only $40. Can’t beat that. Help a girl out with some organization for that bottomless pit of a purse. You know who you are.

5 | This little snack box makes me laugh and holds snacks…two of my favorite things :)

6 | I can think of a whole lot of friends, right off the top of my head, that would get hours of enjoyment out of this gift, myself included. Oh, and I think the dogs would like it too.

Happy shopping! Now, excuse me while I go order my dogs a ball with teeth.

Happy Hump Day!

My sister and I are lucky enough to celebrate our birthdays just a week apart, and while my high strung childhood demeanor may have caused an issue when it came to sharing birthday parties when we were young, now that we’re all grown up (mind you, I use that term very loosely) we thought it would be fun to celebrate our birthdays together this year.

I decided to keep the birthday motifs to a minimum and just have a fun get together with some tasty appetizers, snacks, and, of course, a few cocktails. Since we weren’t exactly trying to draw attention to the two milestone birthdays we were celebrating (like any good sister would, I’ll keep the numbers to myself) I decided to go with a simple winter party table, mixing metals with whites and wood tones.
party tableI used some wooden serving platters, a white cake stand, and some copper bowls (two of those are actually baking tins I snagged at Goodwill a few weeks ago) to act as a base to serve the food, and mixed a few more metals in with silver and gold candle holders. The metals and wood tones together feel perfectly winter without being ‘in your face holiday’ and could really work for so many other settings too.

table 2Here’s a longer shot of the (almost finished) dining room. I set up the console at the back of the room as a bar with a tray full of wines bottles, decanter,s and all necessary glassware.

On a side note, don’t mind the naked wall to the right. We have some demolition plans so nothing is being hung until we figure out what’s going on there. It’s all still a work in progress, people, but we decided to put our tools down for a night and celebrate with friends, and boy did we need that :)

As far as the food goes, I kept things pretty simple. I threw together a few different flatbreads, one of our favorite crostini recipes, some cheese & fruit, and a few bowls of nuts. Just some simple finger foods to snack on. Here are a few shots of the table in action (and by action I mean, covered in food) snapped on my iPhone just before the guests started to arrive.

I was thinking about putting together a few of my recipes and sharing them with you late on this week. What do you think?

Basically, if you ever get a chance to share a birthday with your sister, I highly recommend it ;)

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving! Happy Tuesday!
